Lance Hahn

Sad news. A good guy passed away today. Lance Hahn, singer/guitarist of J Church and Cringer (not to mention a million other influential punk rock projects).

J Church is a favorite band for both of us, and it seems like even though we didn't know him, he was a part of our lives for a long time from listening to his music. Lance had kidney disease and was on dialysis, something we're both too familiar with, so we sympathize extra hard for his friends and family. He was only 40 years old.

The world is diminished in his absence. Here's what kind of perosn Lance was: About 15 years, my then partner and I were at Gilman St Warehouse in Oakland for a Neurosis show. We were a few blcoks from the venue when we were accosted by skinheads, calling us names and threatening us and the other attendees at the gig. We verabbly sparred with them and then went to Gilman seeking reinforcements to stand up to them but person after person blew us off, not wanting to get involved. But when we told Lance what had happened, he came with us immediately to seek out the transgressors. Luckily for them (and most likely us!) they had left by the time we returned to the scene. We'll miss you, Lance. Tom Scut
