Animal rights group praises 'gas chamber' mouse trap

"Carbon dioxide is then released into the sealed chamber, rendering the rodent unconscious within ten seconds. It then dies 'quickly and humanely' in under a minute,"

Ugh. This makes me want to punch PETA in the stomach.

I wonder what PETA thinks about the holocaust...

When concerned with animals suffering, dont you believe that this device is a much better alternative to so many other devices out there? Because we are still living in such a time where not all people care about an animals right to live people are going to set mouse traps and i belive this is a much more humane way of killing. PETA also endorses live traps, and i beleive on a higher level. Do you not care about the ammount of animal SUFFERING that is also in this world? Ide like to know wht you think of no kill shelters.

please dont take this as an attack as we should not be attack eachother when were all fighting for the same cause. It was just taht punch in the stomach comment.

This seems in keeping with PETA's overall policy of trying to seem more "mainstream." You can just see the wheels turning in the head of one of their PR people saying "We'll definitely get some 'Build a Better Mousetrap' coverage with this one..." so they gave it a big thumbs up.

I guess that is what frustrates me about this is that nobody asked them. They went out of their way to give this a "proggy" award and garner some press. Had someone asked PETA for a position on the mouse gas chamber and they said "I guess it is better than catching their legs in a spring and letting them starve to death" I might have felt more inclined to give them some leeway. Instead they went out of their way to praise this product when I would expect an organization founded around the ethical treatment of animals to, at the very least, not SUPPORT the killing of anything.

There is a difference between viewing this as the lesser of two evils and giving it an award. And that's why PETA gets my official "Punch in the Nads Award" for April 2006.

-yes with the last comment. to go that far that PETA gives them an award! fuck that. PETA's always giving awards out to shit like that. seafood restaurants for carrying fake shrimp. yeah, it's nice they have the option, but they shouldn't get an award for it. we don't care that they're trying to reach people in small towns or whatever. they even gave an award to a restaurant here that serves meat just because they have a couple of vegan soups. freely giving out awards like that is lame. we don't care what you think of that, we think it's shitty.
-same thing, it's nice there's that option of a mouse trap, if there was no other option. but the thing is, there are better options. there are no-kill mouse traps out there. we carry them in the store, and they fucking work. fuck it if it's not a "permanent" outcome and a mouse comes back. big deal if you have to catch them again. if you're vegan, you should be used to going out of your way to be ethical.
-you use this mouse trap, you're still killing an animal. it's a different situation then when a dog in a shelter who has to be humanely killed for illness reasons or whatever. the dog is in there probably because of a dumb human's doing. the mouse is trying to live the best it can with us in the way.

I hear these are really popular in Germany.

this really comes at no suprise to me. I would really like to see the end of peta

off topic of the mousetrap, but I agree with the PETA awards, and other "veggie" awards being a load of shit. Some place in Boulder that prides itself on their "exotic" meats like buffalo, elk, and quail consitently wins Best Vegetarian Restaurant awards. idiots.

It really pains me to see us, as a movement, constantly lashing out at one another. Surely you all believe that the people at PETA are thinking about their efforts in a utilitarian way (i.e. How are they to most effectively minimize animal suffering?) and acting accordingly. I disagree with some of their positions/methods, but I agree with them that there are many worse things that can be done to a person (human or other animal) than murder. And to all those Holocaust comments, I say that the gas chamber was far from the worst of the Nazis' crimes. An end to PETA, indeed! Those of you who think the situation would be bettter without them need to get out of your less-than-1%-of-the-population vegan bubble. Seriously.

I tried to get signatures for PETA's anti-KFC campaign recently, and I had vegans telling me they wouldn't sign because they couldn't support PETA! I'm sure the boiled-alive chickens appreciate their "principles."

Can we PLEASE, oh, please, stand together on our many common goals...even if we have to grit our teeth to do it.

I definately think hat we cant just sit around and let the worst of the worst suffering go on while in our attempts with talking with people and gaining their understanding. Sure we all would rather see these animals live but during our times of outreach ide like to see this suffering decreased and i think this is what PETA is trying to do with its praise twards this product. But off topic, was this such a good thing to post on a store's board? Customers all have different ideals and we should respect those. Just state your opinion and leave out the punching in the stomach and the nads, you just start sounding childish when that comes in.

yeah, we've been posting and stating our personal stances on subjects since day one of opening. isn't a blog, so you can jabber on about your personal beliefs? that makes us not the best business people, but we're not business people. we're not doing this to get the most customers. just the best customers. there are plenty of faceless, appealing stores out there that we don't want to be like. it's okay. and if we sound childish, it's probably because we are.

I don't know if Emiko or Chad posted the last message, but if you guys DIDN'T add your opinion, this site would pretty much suck.

Sure, we can all get along Ok, and buy fake marshmallows from any of a number of sites, but FoodFight is the only place to come to see off the wall opinions and funny shit on a Store site. Who cares if it's a skate video, or saying, "Ugh. This makes me want to punch PETA in the stomach," it's great stuff.

Sure, cusomters all have different ideals. But last I checked, Chad and Emiko personally run the store, with their own money to boot. They are free to say anything. Most of the time it's worth a read, whether I personally agree with it or not.

have you ever punched one of your friends for doing something that you thought was stupid? i know i have.
have you ever deleted one of your friends on myspace cuz they kept sending out shitty chain bulletins?
I DID THAT LAST NIGHT!!

so yeah....everyone can be stupid sometimes....doesn't mean you write them (and their potential) off completely. if we all did that, we'd ALL be lacking friends.

i love foodfight even if i don't always completely agree with their commentary. great blog. haha.

by the way, i asked PETA about it and this is the response i got. it doesn't really address them giving an award. however, i did reply again asking more about that.

"Obviously we are opposed to all lethal animal traps but we recognized this one as being a little more humane than the old traps that slam down on their necks, spines or limbs. Those traps cause the animal to suffer prolonged periods of time where these traps reduce that suffering. The only traps that we encourage people to buy are the ones that catch the animal but don't harm it so you're able to release it outside. :-)

i think it's just an.. unintentional mixed message. which isn't overly intelligent by them. but, watchagonnado...

Come on! How long are we as a community going to justify these redicolous actions to benefit the so called greater good. PETA does some absolutely insane shit, someone needs to be there to call them out on it. An individual would not be tolerated for being racist, or sexist just because he is beneficial activist. We should not allow PETA to get away with things like this purely based on the fact that they do some positive things for the movement. When you fuck up, you should have to face the consequences. Enough is enough.

Just wanted add myself to the list of loyal customers who don't always agree with every opinion expressed by Chad/Emiko but I don't EVER want them to stop expressing those views. The blog is their little editorial page. There are plenty of vanilla, faceless corporations for you to patronize if that's what you'd prefer. Or simply skip the blog and go straight to the online store!

But Cheesus fucking Cripes on a crutch, PETA has been taken over by the meat industry. I know it. There is no other sane explaination. If you want a fucking "humane" mouse trap, get one of these...

theres a post on the peta2 forumn about this:

peta agree with gasing mice?

http://news.scotsman.com/scitech.cfm?id=612262006

if so...why would you suport that when theres ways to get rid of mice without killing them...

Catherine_lalala 4/26/06 2:22 PM
Obviously no ones wants mice to be gassed left right and center. Have you ever stopped to consider any other types of trap? springs, poisons...all painful and slow, they can go wrong, gassing is painless and quick. It is not the gassing per say that is being praised but that it is a step in the right, more humane direction.

bedr00m_danc1ng 4/26/06 2:30 PM
yes ...i have...and i didnt say poisons and spring traps were right...but theres other ways to go about getting rid of mice....catch and release?...they also have this thing you plug into your wall...it makes a low sound humans cant hear but mice and other small animals can the animals dont like the sound so they dont come around....the place i used to work at had problems with miceand they got one and the problem stopped.

bedr00m_danc1ng 4/26/06 2:31 PM
what if a kitten crawls into this "gas chamber "

Obviously we wouldn't fully endorse any product that is lethal to animals, however this is more humane than spring loaded or glue traps that causes agonizing and slow deaths. We sell humane mouse traps that catch the mice so you are able to releases them safely outside at http://www.PETACatalog.com

jenn2006 4/27/06 12:53 PM
what about the trapps you can set them back outside and they go unharmed?

if you wanted to add any comment for peta there ^

Ok...
So..PETA sucks, BUT I guess they don't suck bad enough to take the FoodFight link off of petamall.com. A lot of people probably get directed to this site from that link, thus bringing in more business. PETA SUCKS!! (but don't tell anyone we advertise there!) Hypocrisy. It's a sad sad thing.

Just a word about catch-and-release traps: animals frequently get caught in them and go unnoticed, thus starving to death. I'm not sure where I'm going with this, since I don't condone traps that kill... JUST LET THE RODENTS RUN FREE, DAMMIT!!

A note to "Anonymous" about us being hypocrites.

Yeah, you got us. Busted. But please note that we haven't written every (or maybe any?)"fuck peta" posts on this thing, only posted gripes. We have gripes about everywhere we advertise (local papers, online "veg" sites, etc) pretty much. I (Chad) don't totally write them off, just think PETA can suck a lot of the time and need to be called out on it.

And also, we aren't renewing our "PETA Business Friend" status this year, if that makes you any happier. Although, it has gotten us a lot of business. So, hopefully, we'll now be less hypocritical than you are. Or close, cuz I hear you're doing great things out there Anonymous.
